Past grandeur by Sheila Ash

Elaborate balconies cling to the block’s side
like warts on an old lady’s face.
Wrought ironwork veins verdigris its concrete skin
shimmering moistly from rain canalling to corners,
trickling tears of regret for its dereliction in modernity.
