The author has created a world that is immediately recognizably set in history yet is has a fantastical thread running through it. It feels a bit like a modern day Harry Potter meets His Dark Materials with its Institute of Translators in Oxford, its magical multilingual runes written on silver to power a steampunk world, all overlaid with imperial colonialism, systemic racism and exploitation overtones of the East India Company's ruthless commerce.
