Rajasthan (12) Kumbalgarh

PB281116

PB281157The hilltop fort at Kumbalgarh offers magnificent views across the beautiful countryside. We spent a beautiful day walking between the many temples to be found up there and only scratched the surface of what there was to see.  There are some 36km of ramparts which wind over the hills. The fort itself was only successfully besieged once when a confederacy led by Akbar poisoned its water supply!

There are also dozens of Jain and Hindu temples scattered across the area. The guidebooks say it will take you 2 days to walk round them all if you sleep out overnight. The oldest temple is thought to have been built in the 2nd century.  Walking round them had a similar effect on me as visiting the Forum on my first ever trip to Rome –  omg, I really am walking where the ancients walked :)
